Due to the fact that there is such an increasingly large amount of social media users, it's no surprise that businesses are looking for people to run their social media marketing campaigns. With the right amount of creativity and strategy, businesses can really expand their sales revenue by attracting more consumers to their products/services. By offering promotions/coupons or communicating news about the company itself, consumers are more likely to spend money on the business' products/services. Also mentioned in the article, I think it's amazing that businesses are now able to learn more about their customers using social media. A social media marketing campaign can be crucial to a business' success in the future years.

This is an example of how social media is not only increasing the ways in which companies can reach consumers, but it also shows how social media is affecting companies hiring strategies. It's interesting how the demand and job creation for marketing experts in social media has grown much faster than experts available. I'd imagine this would translate to a new strategy in college marketing curriculums to meet this job market demand.

While I believe nothing will ever replace the references and experiences about companies shared between friends and family as a way to gain new business, I do think that social media is the future of marketing. With such a high percentage of people using multiple social media cites everyday, it would be silly for businesses to not fill positions to effectively manage social media accounts on behalf of the firm. Not only are businesses able to get their products and messages out to potential customers, but they can gather demographic information about who is interested in their products, helping companies building a more accurate target market. I work for a company that has quite an online presence for the field that it is in, and even as an employee outside of the marketing department I see a lot of their advertising strategy around the office. Hashtags, QR codes and links to social media pages come in internal emails, posters and other internal circulation materials. With the elaborate methods being developed to increase an online presence, I wouldn't be surprised to see an emphasis in social media expertise added as an option for business degrees.

Social media marketing is clever. Through this channel of communication there are so many people that can be reached, therefore so many potential customers. I think it is the most brilliant thing to do for anyone trying to build credibility and trying to get more/new clients. On instagram there are so many people marketing and sharing their expertise. There are hairstylist, stores, jewlery merchandise sellers, and much more. There are many weight loss programs as well that use instagram to show before and after pics of ItWorks wraps (that celebrities even use), those pages also show how to apply wraps and what the products the people in the pictures used to get the results that you are witnessing. Marketing through social media is amazing!

Since there is a huge rise in social media and the number of users it is not surprising that social networks are being used for hiring. It is great for the younger generation since they are more familiar with the social networks and can use them efficiently. Younger people are being trained in marketing and advertising without even knowing it growing up. These are usable skills that can be used to benefit companies.

In 2014, companies must have an online presence to be recognized, keep existing customers and find new customers. I truly believe that social media will become a department in a company just like H.R., Sales, Customer Service, etc. There needs to be a team that is dedicated to social media and spreading their brand to online users. Companies will fall behind their competition if they don't social media marketing managers.

Since social media has grown exponentially in the last few years, it is not surprising that companies want to use social media to their advantage. It also is not surprising that experts are not readily available for different organizations to hire. Individuals who intelligently use social media to their benefit can potentially use that experience to enhance a business career. I think that focused courses combining social media and marketing will be present on many college campuses across the country (if not already). Businesses will continue to pursue those who are skillful with social media.

It's extremely important to stay as up to date as possible with social media for jobs. Businesses want young people who can bring something to the table. They will pick the people who are the most capable of coming into the company with skills that can be used.

It is interesting to reflect upon the way social media in business education has evolved. Before its rise, social media was considered in almost a childish light. It was thought of as something teenagers did to waste time and was not given much credibility. Now, we see almost all businesses using social media as a main marketing strategy, and as this article claims, it has become a career path. Education has been forced to adapt to this change in thinking, which we see already through the incorporation of YouTube videos, LinkedIn discussions, and blogs in the classroom. The social media dimension in education is likely to keep growing. I suspect at least a bachelor's degree in social media marketing will soon be available, and likely more research will be conducted on the subject. Social media's role in education has come a long way, and is ever evolving.

It is not surprising to learn that social media marketing is expanding and that the ROI is proving itself. What I find more difficult to swallow is that individuals are having to educate themselves in order to get those job. Are undergraduate and graduate degrees are less valuable to those in the advertising/marketing industry? Do colleges teach their students how to maneuver within social media market fast enough that the information is relevant by the time the students are looking for a job? Perhaps social media marketing jobs are not intended for those with an undergraduate or graduate degree in marketing. Training and education requirements aside, it's wonderful that more jobs are becoming available.

Since I completed my undergraduate degree in 2009 I felt that social media was going to open up many job opportunities in the future. Social media is a communication channel that is (depending on what/how companies are using it) relatively in-expensive and sometimes cost-free to operate, so it makes sense to use that money saved in a budget and hire someone who knows how to use it effectively. Using social media properly involves care full planning, execution and customer engagement. This is definitely a skill that employers should value and actively seek out.

I think there are a couple of pitfalls to Social Media Marketing. It is nearly impossible to say for sure which social media companies will still be around in 5, 10, 15 years. I'm old enought to remember the dotcom bust, many technology companies that were the wave of the future, went bankrupt in a few short years. I think it might be more advangageous for a marketer to not so much specialize in "social media" marketing, but internet and technology based marketing. Technology is advancing at such a rapid pace, it is difficult to theorize where marketing will go in the future.

Justin Gonzalez said...

In my opinion the new job opportunities is great for the economy but as Patrick stated there are plenty of "pitfalls" when dealing with social media. The social media landscape has been evolving faster then any speculator could have imagined. Such as Facebook's fall right after going public and Twitter taking off like it did. The upper management of some organizations may have less experience with a social media giant such as Twitter or Facebook. On the same note it is a lengthy and time consuming process to continually update and post for a company about events and advertising through these sites. Therefore the new jobs that have opened up makes perfect since to adapt to the new era of business and keep up with the ever changing environment of the internet.

Social media has brought about fantastic opportunities for creative business students and employees, allowing them to use both sides of the brain to take full advantage of social media to increase the value of the business. The jobs are only going to increase in number as social media expands it's outlets and more people join in on the "revolution." Companies didn't used to have IT departments, but now we can't imagine a company without one. Social media will do something similar, I think.

It makes sense that businesses and corporations are using social media to reach out and expand. I think it's awesome because it's creating more jobs and also, by going through social media, it makes it easier for many people to discover these opportunities who normally may not have otherwise.

i agree with everyone. Today, Almost everyone spend tons of hours on social media. So, it is very convenient to reach people for advertisers, companies/producers. social media is the easiest way to get to know customers(personal information) and competitors. Also, its very competitive. You cannot just make one post a week and leave it. Companies try to reach out to their customers in a friendly way(liking customers pictures, shoutouts, making conversations) using social media, and it works. Companies have to very active to beat their competitors, to hire the right people, to choose a right partner. It just amaze, and inspires me how technology influence our life. social media is a big part of my life.business that ignores social media will not do good. It is like having a huge blind spot.:)

It is no surprise that social media has extended beyond personal use and now used as a marketing tool for companies. From previous articles, we have seen that social media is easily accessible for many people of all ages. It would be unwise for a company not to use social media as an avenue to reach out to current customers and new/potential customers. By doing so, companies are able to better grasp what the consumer need is in the respective market. In order for companies to utilize social media to the fullest extent, they need to hire some who is affluent in using different types of social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Blogs, etc.).

This article speaks to the massive increase in job openings for individuals with social media or marketing experience in general for posting and managing companies Facebook, Twitter, etc. accounts. Social media has, as the article states, made fantastic growth in the last few years. It will be interesting to watch whether this trend in the consumer space will be adopted wholesale in the business space. In my opinion, it shouldn’t.. at least not business to consumer.

Admittedly, I’m not a prolific Facebooker, but I can’t see many individuals following the posts of Colgate, poring over the latest sock line from GoldToe, or retweeting news from about Bic’s ballpoint pens. All of these of course fall under what Perreault calls “convenience products” which consumers don’t look much at except the price tag before purchasing. If industry does end up going the way of social media as just another marketing tool, I expect it’ll lose some of its potency just like telemarketers and infomercials have done for telephone and television respectively.

I'd like to know how the more senior managers of companies today view social media marketing. The baby boomers have the stigma of being technologically illiterate, but every company in every sector must practice social media marketing to remain relevant. SMM has created its own age of mass media, much like radio and TV did in the first half of the 20th century, when top level managers of today's companies were being recruited and groomed for their current positions. Inevitably, Generation X and Generation Y will continue to use SMM in new, unexpectedly cool ways we don't even know about yet in order to recruit new talent and establish their own brands.

Social media marketing has significantly grown. I finding it interesting that many new companies have social media pages but lack their own webpage or their webpage has gathered spiders and dust bunnies. But marketing via social media offers better targeting whereas the old traditional website is basically mass marketing.

In today's fast moving world it's hard to tell what things are fads and what things are here to stay. As social media continues to capture the time and attention of more and more people it is solidifying it's role in our society. Businesses are taking notice of how lucrative it could be if they could figure out how to successfully advertise on social media sites. This of course is opening more positions in the workforce for people who can run the businesses social media pages. Since our economy is still not at it's best, I think this is a good thing that there are more job opportunities becoming available in this field. Maybe people who wouldn't have the motivation to go to college, will because they enjoy social media and feel like this is a job they can enjoy.

It will be awesome in the future for who has skills and can use social media as a money grow field. Social media is the most popular thins now, people use those social medias for all kinds of industries and age groups. I'd like to say social media could be the best thing for young generation in the future.

Unknown said...

Social media marketing will be the best way to do business with customers in the future, because consider those young generations who can not live without a cell phone, facebook, and twitter......etc. Social media can be the cheapest the way to do those ads. It will be awesome for someone who knows social media skills and provide the services to the companies.

In the past few years we have seen that social media can affect a companies hiring strategies, and now they are also incorporating social media into the actual company. I think this is smart and very innovative. Social media is a great way to reach out to audiences of all types. This will have a huge impact on marketing due to the fact that consumers usually make decisions based off of what they see. So social media would be the perfect way to market, especially in todays world.

This is music to my ears because I am majoring in business administration with an emphasis in marketing and finance, so a career like this is right up my alley. I would love to do something like this. I think it sounds like a lot of fun and something I'd be really good at. I definitely believe these positions will start filling up as soon as the rest of our generation graduates from college. This is something that is second nature to us. We grew up with computers, the internet, and social media so it's just something that we are good at.

I can absolutely agree with the the last comment about writers being in high demand. There are so many vehicles to share your marketing message but there is a shortage in messages. Social media alone has added multiple new ways to communicate with customers. While the story might be the same the content is vastly different whether it be video, articles, photography or posts. Marketers are in short supply of the actual messages. In our company we have the resources to create the strategy but not enough resources to create the content. It's not just that there are not enough writers, it's that they aren't experts in a particular industry. As a marketing project manager, the best way for a writers to position themselves would be to gain an expertise in one or two industries. They would then be able to create content with minimal instruction.

The fact the social media is leading towards jobs for people in the business world is a great opportunity. Especially with it being tough for some college graduates to get jobs post graduation. Social media is obviously very popular and is now proving to be very helpful for more significant things(hence job opportunities). Social media has brought on a new sector to marketing that is continuing to grow and help get information to consumers and potential consumers of a certain brand.

It is undebatable the effects social media is creating in the business world. This article was right when it said that social media is no longer just about personal connections. These social media sites are being used heavily with marketing and advertising. I would be interested in finding out how many new jobs have been created and filled since this great surge in social media. Although one could argue the drawbacks of social media, I think we can all agree that new opportunities have opened up because of it.

I keep seeing jobs for people to run companie's face books or to run their twitter or foursquare accounts. even though this article was posted awhile ago the fact that i keep seeing these job postings only proves how true this article is.

Social media marketing can yield great results if you have the right approach to pulling it off. So, it isn't a huge surprise to me that they are paying people big money to manage their social media accounts for them.

It is really cool to see how technology has evolved, and has now created so many jobs through social media through marketing. Just a little over a century ago marketing was word of mouth and print, and now mass media has connected so many people. Social media marketing is benefiting producers, consumers, as well as the thousands of people who work for these companies.
