It was just one line during the video, but what really jumped out at me was that Facebook is getting most of its new users from older women. You can't stay hip forever - I wonder what their long-term plan is for when users under 30 no longer sign up? Or are they going to be able to make FB such an integrated part of commerce that it become necessary to have an account, in the same way you *can* avoid Google, but it's more trouble than it's worth?
I really enjoyed this video. Although I knew social media has grown hand over fist in the recent past, I did not know any statistics about the growth and and the impact it has had on society. I thought the part that described the length of time it took for the radio, TV, the Internet, iPod, and Facebook to reach 50 million users was extremely eye-opening. I also thought it was interesting that 78% of people trust peer recommendations while only 14% trust advertising.
This was a very well done video. Social media continues to grow even when we think it couldn't possible be anymore connected with our lives, it finds a way. My favorite part was the "We no longer search for news, news finds us...". I have never thought about it but almost all of the news stories I read, come from post I see via a social media site.
This video has a powerful message, and with the help of the statistics it made its case ten times more stronger. It is insane how facebook was able to reach 200 million users in less than one year!I do think social media is a revolution and not just a fad. What I do wonder is how facebook and other social media will continue to keep its customers. If over half the population is under 30 what will happen in 30 years when this generation turns 60. Saying that people care more about their social graphs ranks products and services than how google ranks them proves that the generation is revolting to social media. It's exciting to be in this generation where everything is changing and social media is becoming larger. Who know how social media will evolve in the next 20-40 years.
This video explains how the Social Media Revolution, or "Socialnomics" is here, and we need to accept it. What I've noticed is how important social media is to branding one's company. If you don't have a social media account for your company, it is likely people will think your outdated, and not trust that your information is as current/up to speed as your competitor. I have noticed that companies have halfway accepted the Social Media Revolution, but still like to stick to the traditional ways. People either take social media seriously or do not take it seriously, and the fact is not bogus... its modern day communication and it's not going anywhere whether people like it or not.
I thought this was a very neat and well put together video. It was very accurate. At the same time, it was shocking to see just how much everyone uses social media. I found it some what disturbing that famous movie stars have more twitter followers than several countries have people. In the world of social media, everything you say and do ends up on either Facebook or Twitter. That can be a very bad thing. A lot of companies will check possible employees social media pages and use them as a guide to whether or not they will hire them. People need to be careful what they put on the internet, because once you put it out there, you cannot take it back.
I think I was around 14 when I realized social media and the internet started to become a huge thing in everyone's life. The internet is so powerful, we give it power, because it creates access to EVERYTHING with on click. Sometimes I wonder how much more the internet can offer and if we are ready for the internet of the future. Will it be dangerous, will we give it too much power. I was unaware of most of the statistics I saw in the video. For instance 1 out of 8 married couples met through facebook. I had no idea that facebook had love connections like this. The internet and social media never cease to amaze me or entertain me.
Wow, I am surprised how fast Facebook reached 200 million users. It is also shocking that it is ahead of pornography since many of the views are ranged in all ages. Since there are so many user of social media under the age of 30 it will be interesting to see if the number will remain constant. Facebook is pretty much topped out on how many users it can have and people tend to like change. I am curious to see what the next big thing will be or if Facebook will be able to change with the high rate of change people strive for, "out with the old and in with the new."
These are very compelling statistics that show the magnitude of influence that social media has. I only have one question to ask; what ever happened to MySpace, and what will Facebook do differently to keep it from failing like MySpace? Some say that Facebook will one day turn into a "MySpace" like baroness waste, becoming obsolete. But one thing that I feel Facebook is doing differently than MySpace, is that they are truly diversifying their retained earnings into creating valuable products and services besides their home site. I feel like this means that Facebook will be here to stay, because they are staying innovative; as opposed to MySpace (and we all know what happened there). However so, is it possible that one day Facebook will become unpopular? At that, will this cause the "Social Media Revolution" to end as we know it? I feel that only time can tell.
I am a fan of statistical information so I really enjoyed this video. It's interesting to think about how we interact with others. To be honest, I am "friends" with a lot of those older women that are joining facebook. Different generations use social media for different reasons and it will be interesting to see how these social media giants (facebook, twitter, youtube, etc.) plan to keep the younger crowd connected on their site instead of losing them to other sites. I saw that Nick Garrett commented on the part, "We no longer search for news, news finds us.." I completely relate to this comment. I don't know how may times I have said, "I saw on facebook that..." and precede to share news that I read in my newsfeed. Great video.
Definitely a kick-ass video explaining poignantly what we all know very well because, well frankly, we live our lives by and through it. Advertising has become personal and slightly creepy, but effective all the same, and if we play our cards right and keep up with the trends (or perhaps create some), than we have a lovely platform for successfully influencing whoever we want!
Social media is taking over our society. Social media is becoming not only a fad but something businesses must incorporate to be competitive in this day and age. In the video it said 1 out of 8 marriages come from the couple meeting online. I used to think meeting online was creepy, but now I am a believer in online relationships because I have personally seen so many work out. Facebook really hit it big around the world. It is connecting people from all over and they have many views a day. The video said 50% of the UK's internet traffic is from Facebook. Facebook tops Google weekly traffic use. The use of social media is so popular that its really becoming part of our society. This is what we thrive on and companies have to realize this.

This was a very interesting video. I don't believe that social media is a fad. I do believe that social media will continue to evolve and change. A few years ago, most people were on myspace. Now many people have moved to facebook and other sites. The proof is in the numbers. It is a fast and relatively cheap way of advertising. People will always use social media, even though as generations change - so will social media.
This video did a great job of detailing how social media has grown in the past decade and how it has effected every generation, and industry. I agree that social media is not a fad, but that it will continue to evolve and affect the way companies market and advertise to their target markets. The vide displayed a quote by Erik Qualman, "We don't have a choice on whether we do social media, the question is how well we do it." I think his statement is extremely relevant in the business environment today. As the video stated, we don't find the new and/or products, they find us. So it is up to the companies to use social media to their advantage to go find customers. It seems like social media is allowing customers to become lazier while businesses do all the work. As a customer, that's fine with me!
Its amazing how many people use social media, and how often they use it. I don’t think its shocking that it reached so many users faster than other products because it is free. I would want to make sure radios, ipods, ect were a good investment before buying one. Facebook takes a few minutes to sign up for and can be deleted without losing money unlike the other products. I think the most interesting part of the video is the section where it says that 78% of consumers trust peer recommendations, while only 14% trust advertisements. Advertisers main job is to get you to buy what they are selling, so it makes sense that people wouldn’t trust them as much, and I doubt that has changed much. Social media has made it much easier to share bad experiences with companies. Being able to find reviews so easily makes company's perform better, because they know they will be held accountable if they don't. Most of the statistics seem to just be sensationalism. Skipping commercials with TiVo is comparable to switching radio stations when a commercial comes on. Even if you leave it on there is no way to know if everyone ‘tuned in’ is actually paying attention.
First of all I'd like to comment that the video said "Wiki is an Hawaiian term for 'quick'." Im pretty sure you would use "a" instead of "an." Anyways, I was also kind of skeptical of some of the statistics given in the video. For example, when it said 1 out of 8 relationships start on a social media website… I would bet that at least 1 out of 4 relationships, if not more, start over social media. Now-a-days people are more comfortable talking to someone indirectly through electronics, rather than face-to-face, especially in a public forum like a social media website. One thing is for sure about the video's information that I can certainly agree with: social media is taking over the world.
I knew Social Media was big, but I did not realize statistically how many people engage in it. One of the facts I found the most interesting is if Facebook was a country, it'd be the 3rd largest. I also was surprised to see that 1 in 8 couples met via social media. Very different world than what my parents grew up in where most of their friends (and themselves) married their high school sweetheart. I personally don't feel like that was too long ago considering how fast things have changed and the rapid growth of the internet and social media. Makes me wonder what social media will be like 10 years from now..
The idea that stuck out the most to me in this video was the affect that social media has on the perception of your brand as a direct result of how quickly both good and bad experiences spread across the internet. It makes sense that (large) companies would have entire teams focused on their social media presence in order to both promote the brand and to mitigate the problems of users with negative experiences with the product/service. When you consider the number of eyeballs that this content reaches, this becomes money well spent.
The idea of socialnomics or that a majority of things get done through social media isn't anything new to me, but a few of these statistics surprised me. For instance, it surprised me that Facebook has more weekly traffic than Google, the number on engine. But, the most shocking thing to me was that Britney Spears is somewhat still relevant and has more followers than the population of many countries, like Israel. One line that really stuck out to me though was “We no longer search for the news, the news finds us, which is definitely true.

I have seen a similar video either done by the same people or taken off this kind of idea. This video isn't shocking but it is interesting to see how the world has become reliant on social media to the core. From day to day communication and entertainment to deriving the largest influence on purchases made social media has changed the world. This makes me excited as well as a bit timid to see what the future holds and how quality interaction face to face with people will decrease. The social skills that were necessary as a part of life up until the past few decades will continue to decrease with the growing of social media. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few generations and the possibility of marketing to have a complete shift to social media.
This video is filled with statistics, which has indisputably been proven to be a very striking way of presenting information. Marketing has taken notice of this attention-grabbing technique and businesses have used it in the way they attempt to advertise and sell various products and services to potential customers. The use of statistics assists in enforcing an argument or statement, which we can see in this video.
This video had some interesting facts, and the one that struck me the hardest is that social media has become a major part of our communication. Technology has changed a lot in our lives, just like it has made this blog social media that I am posting to possible!
Cool video! I am super reluctant to being a part of the Facebook fad. I try to stay off of it because people annoy me with their BS and problems but unfortunately, I think the video is right about it being a change in the fundamental way that we communicate as humans. Very sad that so many people will be wasting so much time with this stuff. Also, very scary that we are so much more easily targeted by advertisers by routinely being on social media sites like Facebook and YouTube.
This video did a good job of laying out how social media has evolved over the years. However, I would like to know more about what that's affected. For instance, have companies seen an increase in sales as a result of their social media preference? Do companies find that negative comments on social media are more damaging, or do they give the companies to address issues better than they could have before? I'd like to know more about some of those details and what effect it has on their social media marketing strategies.
The world has become a global village.Social networks allow people to communicate and to exchange information. The development of social networks has the dependence leads to tools such as Facebook, Twitter or Google. the persons born in the late 90s and early 2000s are the most exposed to the revolution of social media. Facebook proves more effective than phone or email and even mail. Growing up in a culture in which to visit his neighbor is custom, I am shocked that Facebook has destroyed these practices. People should be aware of the negative aspects of social networks because they encourage perversion, the cyber bulling, identity theft.
this video was pretty interesting with all statistics on how many people actually use social media sites. it just shows that almost everyone uses facebook or some sort of social media in some sort of way. one of the quotes even say every one uses it just how well you use it is the difference. i think that goes to show that social media sites can be very helpful and not just for communicating with friends. its a great way for companies to have a certain image they want there customers to see. also people see more ads on social media sites than tv now a days so it only makes since to use it in a marketing aspect.
The clip was extremely powerful for new and existing organizations. Can a company even survive without adapting to the social media market? In my opinion, absolutely not. If a company chooses to ignore the social media aspect of their business I see them dieing out within a decade. The "social media revolution" is just that a revolution and in this point in time the internet, and how companies market their product through this medium is much like the wild west. Little censorship and for the most part infinitely growing. Can this trend last forever without the regulations and censorship that has been placed on Television, Radio, and physical ads?
It is amazing how quickly the rise of social media has happened. There has never been something so quickly to influence so many people. With the rise of cell phones around the globe social media is becoming more accessible to those in emerging markets. This is creating more social media members than most thought possible and as more countries become more affluent social media becomes larger each day.
Social media continues to produce insane stats that would be totally alien to the baby boomer generation. One thing that I've noticed in regards to social media lately is that CNN admits to learning about stories via Twitter more and more often. Think about that: they revolutionized the news model by taking advantage of satellite technology in the early 90s, and now a service that is available to a vast majority of the world's population is beating them to the punch on some stories.
The hard part is valuing some of these social media companies once they want to be publicly funded...
Some of those statistics just floored me, such as Facebook would have the 3rd largest population if ranked with nations. I think one of the biggest challenges for companies with regards to social media is keeping up with the migration of users to other social media platforms. For example, I remember reading somewhere that teenagers are using Facebook less and migrating to Snapchat, whereas the video points out that the largest growing number of Facebook users are 55-65.
It is truly amazing how something can become such a huge part of our lives without us really knowing it. I had absolutely no clue about all the stats the video shared about the impact of social media. I remember when people were just starting to create pages on Myspace and now there are so many different social media sites. I still wonder how long social media as we know it will last. One of the stats in the video was how new Facebook user were mostly middle aged women. You know what they say, when your mom knows about a trend that's just when it is becoming uncool. Joking aside, I don't think we will ever go back to having no social media at all, but I just wonder about social media sites in the future. What will they offer and how are they are going to be designed?
This was a fun video to watch. I thought it was neat that about 70 percent of people trust advice from peer reviews but only 14 percent of people trust advertisements. Makes you realize the importance using social media as an advertising platform because most people trust their peers.
This video definitely illustrates that social media is here to stay and is the future for goods and services. I think it will be very interesting to see how well some companies adapt to the changes and how some companies will be resistant and might ultimately fail because of their antiquated views.
This video was very interesting. The line that stuck with me the most was "Social media isn't a fad, it's a fundamental shift in the way we communicate". This says a lot about the impact social media has on our world today. Most of communication is done through social media, and the fact that business's are expanding their use of social media shows how much of an impact it has. Social media is being used in most aspects of everyday life. This video was very clear on presenting how much we use social media everyday, and that if we don't, we need to start very soon, because it is taking over!
I definitely think this is a very interesting video. Social media is so common we don't even think twice about it anymore. It's "weird" to me if someone doesn't have a Facebook or a Twitter, let alone someone not have a computer! I think it's really unfortunate that companies are finding people using social media. I always like to apply for jobs in person so I can meet them and they can experience my personality. I feel that they won't get that if they're trying to find people online. I do feel that the internet and social media is a great place for entertainment, learning new things, getting the news, and aiding in education. It is a very beneficial tool.
The statistic that stuck out to me the most is how quickly it took each medium to reach 50 million users. The fact that facebook reached 200 million users in one year and it took tv and radio years to do the same is astounding. As a marketer this means the job gets more complex. By the time you learn about a new social media forum, educate yourself, and implement a plan, there are probably already 3 new sites. It gets mind boggling but as the video points out it's not a fad and to be a relevant brand you must participate. I work in a mature service industry where our professionals are not always the most tech savvy. In the online referral world, it's a constant struggle to convince the trade that they must manage their online reputation. I've shown this video in trade meetings and some guys get really heated because they know not participating in social media is hurting their business but they don't know where to start.
The thing I found probably most interesting about this video is the link between the idea that social media has linked "word of mouth" to "world of mouth" and that people trust consumer recommendations much more than advertisements. This is profound from a marketing point of view, because it completely changes the concept of brand management. Now, marketing managers have a global scale of publicity and word of mouth to monitor. That introduces a whole new business sector.
1 out of 8 couples met using social media and 95% of companies use social media for recruitment, and people still think social media is just a fab? Really? It has changed the way we interact with people around the world. I love how it showed 50% of mobile internet traffic in the UK is for Facebook. This video shows how the world has embraced social media and it is now a way of life.
This was an awesome video that woke me up on the scope of social media's reach. 50% of the population is under 30. Woah! 96% of millennials are on social media, these are incredible numbers. It's crazy to think how fast things are changing. Right now individual people and companies are struggling to understand how to implement social media into their strategies. Many that have tried have not had great success and still lack that critical factor of being able to drive sales using social media. Now what's really crazy is that we are struggling with these questions now, but with those kinds of statistics things are going to be changing fast, very fast. I think it is smart to try and hop on this wave as soon as possible in the business world, especially for us entrepreneurship students. This is easily an area that is going to blow up beyond what we can imagine and to get left behind could be crushing to a business or they may have to shell out thousands of dollars a month to have someone handle it for them if they can't do it in-house.
