I have an Instagram account, but have not found it to be much use. I enjoy taking pictures and appreciating good photography, but I am not interested in seeing all the camera phone pictures on Instagram. Maybe this has changed since I last used it, but I believe I am in the minority of users who don't find the iPhone app appealing.
I've never used Instagram, but I am not surprised that both Instagram and Pinterest have increased in popularity and therefore significantly increased their market share in the social media world.
I know many people, myself included, who tear recipes, articles, photos etc out of magazines to save them for future use or sharing them with others. As the article stated, Pinterest created a niche for by taking idea sharing and combining it with the growing trend of social media. This sort of idea sharing is something that people have been doing for years, and Pinterest has only updated the way we do it.
I spend (read: waste) a lot of time on Pinterest. Its interface is easy to use and I think it appeals to multiple generations where Twitter and Facebook are still mainly for younger generations. I think we will see its popularity and market share continue to grow.

I recently started using Instagram and I have noticed that I have taken more pictures with my phone since I started the account. I have no idea why but the only reason I can think of is that Instagram makes it easier to share photos on multiple social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare. I have no experience with Pinterest other than the fact that my wife is on it.......all the time.
No experience with either one of these but do people really need more social sites? Ive only been a facebook user for 18 months or so and can't keep up with that. Don't think I'll be subscribing.
I think its great that they found their own niche market with such a high demand. You do not see 17,000 percent growth in a year very often. I hope their is something similiar to these site's directed more towards men soon!

This is not very surprising. I would say that niche markets were the next logical step for social media. No one wants to topple Facebook, especially after seeing the Google+ attempt. The next place to go is to move the market in a new direction.
I don't really know to much about either one, but I have been seeing and hearing a lot of talk about Instagram. I have noticed alot of people who take pictures with their phones use Instagram alot. Its unique how Pintrest and Instagram didn't make themselves like facebook, yet still were able to become one of the top 20 social websites. It will be interesting on whether or not they can maintain their shares in the market.
Pinterest allows people to create an online scrapbook by using a board to pin items that they are passionate about. Instagram is a mobile photo-sharing app it is mostly a social network with followers sharing photo updates. They are perfect platforms to capture the audience of people that rely on visual appeal to market their products and both have the essentials of great social platform. They are addictive and involve sharing of images-so they convey emotions and not just words. They are easy to use visual platform for people with no inclination or time to blog. Photo-sharing has become more creative and so much easier with Pinterest and Instagram. No wonder they are gaining popularity and their market share is growing!

I am not surprised that Pinterest and Instagram are growing at exponential speeds. They are both genius. The fact that both of these companies identified a niche was the ticket. I salute Pinterest and Instagram; they have identified the gap, and have capitalized on it with amazing apps that serve many people in the way they want to be served. That is the ticket to success and survival. Instagram turns simple photos into amazing photos with emotion with the press of a button. The ability to legitimately create photos in 5 seconds that would take professional photographers an hour to edit is mind blowing. Personally, I use Pinterest much more than Instagram. I especially enjoy the Food & Drink, DIY & Crafts, and Home Décor boards.

I use both. Instagram is fun and for me less intrusive than Twitter in that it is just pictures which I like to share anyway. It has the added plus of making my pictures look better than they are with my phone camera. Pinterest is something that I could waste my life away on. Given that I started my household nearly 20 years ago, I have files and binders of projects and ideas. Then I started saving them in my bookmarks which was equally as difficult to manage. With Pinterest, it is perfect. I make my boards and can organize them so easily. The worst secret I have is that I also use StumbleUpon to find ideas and then pin them to by boards. That way I don't even have to search the ideas. It is like a slide show of things that StumbleUpon thinks I might like.

I think its great that these social media sites have found a way to reach such a niche market in such an efficient way. It is not very often that you can find over 17,000 percent growth in a year.

I'm not surprised at all by Pinterest's growth. It really filled a need that wasn't being met by any other social media site. Personally, I use it all the time to save ideas for parties, home decor and other random things that I had just used bookmarks for before. I can literally say that, as a mom, the site has made my life easier.
